Pilgrimages and Souvenirs

16.6. - 20.12.2026

Pilgrimages represent one of the oldest forms of tourism, and for Christians the outstanding destinations have been the Holy Land in Palestine and the monasteries of Mount Athos in Greece. Pilgrimages were made on foot, on horseback, by train or by ship.

The earliest mementos were gifts for the guests of monasteries, but later, as travellers arrived in groups, a much greater variety of souvenirs became available.

This exhibition concentrates on the souvenirs brought back from monasteries and other pilgrimage destinations.
