The exhibition ”Approaching the Sacraments” presents photographs of the sacraments of the Orthodox Church. Juuso Jonninen, a young photographer, an author of these photographs, describes the exhibition:
“Photography has been a part of my life for 10 years. Many people used to see my nature and sport photographs. However, I would like to bring up something new about myself by presenting this theme – Sacraments of the Orthodox Church.
The exhibition is built of seven sacraments of the Orthodox Church; there are 1 – 4 photos of each sacrament. These photographs show viewers things they usually do not see, for example, preparing the offering of bread and wine for the Holy Communion.
Photographic situations are mostly real, photos are mostly documentary. There are also posed photos on the exhibition.
Based on background data, I am looking for more information about sacraments. My aim was to create new photographs of sacraments from my own point of view, not to repeat existing images.
A great challenge of the documentation process is that you have to be attentive and be in the process constantly. The situation should be expected beforehand, because lost moments cannot be recovered. I tried to plan angles and my own movements an advance; however, I had also the opportunity to act according to the current situation.”
The exhibition of Juuso Jonninen “Approaching the Sacraments – Sacraments of the Orthodox Church from the viewpoint of a young photographer” is a part of an internship’s work in the photography program at the Ingman Cultural College.
